Beyond the Destination: Inside Portugal’s 4 Cities Shaping the Future of Hospitality
Portugal

In our first series, “Your Next Chapter in Hospitality: Olá, Portugal!”, we introduced Portugal as RMC Asia’s newest destination. In this second series, we dive deeper into what makes Portugal an exciting and meaningful place to grow in hospitality.

It is not only the country itself that dictates your decision to participate in an international program. It is also the people you will encounter, the places you visit, the way the city is, and your personal expectations.

Portugal is more than one kind of experience in this case. The 4 main cities in this program are the best examples of modern hospitality in Europe. They are all very different from each other.

Lisbon, Porto, Algarve, and Cascais are not merely cities, but places where theory transforms into practice, turn culture into international success stories, and where people develop into professionals prepared for any challenge on the world stage.

Instead of seeing these places as simply somewhere to go, why not think of them as something else, which would alter your perception?

Lisbon: The Art of Balancing Heritage and Innovation

Lisbon is the city that has never been at rest.

In the early morning, you will be able to walk along the narrow streets of the Alfama District, observing the architectural masterpieces with their tiny windows decorated by Portuguese tile art (azulejos). And, after just a few moments, you’ll be surrounded by a truly cosmopolitan environment of modern luxury hotels and trendy rooftop bars.

Quite a contrast, isn’t it? But that is exactly what defines Lisbon.

Lisbon has been among the fastest-growing tourist destinations in Europe in the last decade. It is not only due to the increase in visitors; however, changes occurred at an incredibly rapid pace. A variety of globally famous hotel chains joined this market, competing against small-scale local hotels with heritage inspiration. A culinary revolution took place, making Lisbon’s restaurants highly popular worldwide. Restaurants experiment with traditional Portuguese cuisine, adding modern twists to its recipes.

Nevertheless, what makes this city exceptional is the perfect balance between the past and the present. For example, in this city, hospitality means something beyond meeting the visitors’ needs; it involves preserving heritage values and incorporating them into new standards of service. One can notice that the level of hospitality remains hospitable and welcoming despite the high number of tourists. Although challenges arise, local culture continues to play a major role and remains the core of Lisbon’s marketing strategy.

The city offers an excellent opportunity for talents in the hospitality industry to experience how a global city operates while preserving its culture. They receive lessons regarding hospitality, understanding that it goes far beyond merely doing the job.

Porto: Less Rush, More Meaning

While Lisbon is a bustling and lively city, Porto is the complete opposite of that. This is located in northern Portugal, and it is a rather peaceful city full of contemplation; yet, it is deeply rooted in Portugal’s culture. This is exactly what makes this place great.

Traveling trends are constantly evolving. While the former was characterized by such questions as “Where do you stay?”, the modern world has shifted towards asking “How do you feel?” Porto gives an effortless answer to that question. Everything about this city tells some stories, and there are no other places similar to Porto, for it boasts the unique experience of having a picturesque Douro River surrounded by a variety of buildings, local pubs offering wine with great enthusiasm, and much more.

Hospitality in Porto differs from that offered elsewhere. Here, hospitality seems to be a rather personal phenomenon, with a deeper connection between staff and guests than just business-like interactions. Thus, it offers us the opportunity to understand the emotional side of hospitality perfectly well. We learn that hospitality doesn’t have to be something luxurious; it is all about interacting.

Algarve: The Ultimate Test of Skill and Speed

Lisbon and Porto are more famous for their culture and unique experiences, whereas the Algarve is more famous for its capabilities and efficiencies. The Algarve is considered one of the best destinations to visit in Europe. This region consists of picturesque coastlines, premium hotels, and many tourists from other countries. The hospitality industry here reaches an entirely new level of intensity. The hotels are always fully occupied throughout the peak season. The restaurant is overcrowded. Guests demand perfection, and that’s when the trainees learn.

This is the place where concepts and theories are tested in practice. Here, there can be no tolerance towards any big blunders. This is not the moment when one could linger in hesitation. For an aspiring young professional to thrive effectively in such conditions, they must be able to adapt to various cultures and preferences of the guests. It is precisely for this reason that the Algarve makes an excellent location for professional development. In fact, gaining experience here will make a person mentally tougher, more skilled in problem-solving, and better at coping with pressure.

Instead, the Algarve can serve as a model that shows the way forward for the industry. Where previously the focus was on the number of people visiting, now the emphasis is on the experience that they have when visiting, the length of time spent, and the range of services provided. Apart from being an important holiday destination, the Algarve also shows where the entire industry is moving towards.

Cascais: Effortless Luxury, Perfectly Delivered

Cascais is unique compared to the 3 other cities since it is more refined, discreet, and subtle. The city can be found on the Portuguese Riviera, which is famous for its high-end lifestyles and beaches. It is quite close to Lisbon.

One thing that characterizes the service in Cascais is that it doesn’t come across as forceful and intrusive. Instead, it is subtle, sophisticated, and imperceptible. That is what makes the city special. To deliver such high levels of service, trainees need to be extremely observant and familiarize themselves with the preferences of the guests.

One Country, A Complete Hospitality Journey

Don’t those cities seem quite diverse? However, when we look at them as a whole, they give us a comprehensive picture of the current state of the hospitality industry and its prospects.

Portugal connects everything from fast-paced global settings to deeply personal experiences, from high-pressure operations to refined luxury. And that much variety in one country? That’s rare.

At this time, Portugal finds itself at a unique crossroads. Rising interest in tourism and hospitality investments can be attributed to the desire for higher-quality experiences. The primary resource driving this movement is talent. Individuals within this industry require skill, an international outlook, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity.

Ready to Be Part of This Journey?

Nowadays, Portugal has become much more than a destination. This is a place where various ideas, experiences, and opportunities unite by themselves.

Our 4 visits to Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, and Evora prove that each trip to Portugal can be initiated by many various reasons. Some people visit in order to receive useful experience; some believe that this is the way to expand one’s circle; others consider traveling to be an intelligent step.

To understand what opportunities this can give you, apply to our program and explore it yourself.
